Count Words and Characters, Fix Case in One Click
How the counts are calculated, where character limits matter, and how to use UPPERCASE, lowercase, and Title Case without mangling your text.
1Why Your Draft Should Stay in Your Browser Tab
People paste all kinds of things into word counters: unpublished articles, cover letters, legal clauses, internal emails. A tool that does the counting in your browser means the text does not need to be sent anywhere to get a number back.
ToolMany keeps what you type in the page's own memory. There is no save button and no account, and the text is gone when you close the tab. That is convenient for sensitive drafts, but it also means you should copy anything you want to keep before you leave.
2How Counting and Case Conversion Work
Live Text State
Everything you type or paste is held in the text box. Pasted content arrives as plain text, so fonts and styling from the source are dropped.
Words and Characters
Words are counted by trimming the text and splitting on whitespace. Characters count every character in the box, including spaces and line breaks.
Case Changes and Copy
UPPER and lower use standard conversion. Title capitalizes the first letter of every word and lowercases the rest. Copy sends the result to your clipboard.
3Word Counts, Character Limits, and Title Case Rules
A word here is any run of characters between spaces, so a hyphenated term like well-known counts as one and a lone dash counts as one too. Word processors usually agree within a small margin but can treat numbers, symbols, and hyphens a little differently, so use whichever count your publisher or school actually specifies.
Common limits are guidelines worth knowing: about 155 characters for a search meta description, about 60 for a title tag, 280 for a standard X post, and 160 per segment for a plain SMS. Search engines truncate by pixel width rather than a fixed number, so leave some margin. Also note that this Title Case capitalizes every word, including small ones like and, of, and the, so it is not strict AP or Chicago style. Adjust those words by hand for formal headings.
4ToolMany vs. Other Word Counters and Editors
| Feature | ToolMany | WordCounter.net | Google Docs | Microsoft Word |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Account or install needed | None | None | Google account | Install or Microsoft account |
| Live word and character count | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| One-click case change | UPPER, lower, Title | Yes | Through the Format menu | Through Change Case |
| Extra stats (sentences, reading time) | No, words and characters only | Yes | Partly | Partly |
| Best for | Quick private paste-and-check | Detailed writing stats | Writing and sharing documents | Full document editing |
This tool does one job: fast word and character counts with simple case conversion. If you need keyword density or reading time, a dedicated writing-stats site covers more. Competitor details are typical behavior and can change.
5Target Scenarios for a Browser Word Counter
Students and Applicants
Check essays, personal statements, and scholarship answers against strict word limits before you paste them into a portal.
SEO Writers and Bloggers
Test meta descriptions and headlines against length guidelines, and clean up capitalization in titles before publishing.
Social Media Managers
Measure captions and post drafts against platform character limits without opening a heavy editor.
Developers and Data Teams
Switch labels, constants, and column names between UPPERCASE and lowercase while you tidy spreadsheets and code comments.
6Pro Strategies for Cleaner Text
Count After Your Final Edit
Do the last count once your wording is settled. Small edits near a limit can easily push you over by a few characters.
Copy the Original Before Converting Case
A case change replaces the text in the box and there is no undo button. Keep a copy of the original so you can return to it.
Review Title Case by Hand
Because every word is capitalized, re-lowercase small words and keep brand names exactly as the brand writes them.
Check Which Count Your Platform Uses
A school, publisher, or platform may count characters with or without spaces. Confirm the rule before you trim your text to fit.
