A low tolerance (10 to 25) removes only colors almost identical to your click. It is the safest setting for flat backdrops, but it can leave a faint halo where edge pixels blend the subject into the background. Higher values (40 to 80) clear shadows and gradients, yet they start eating into the subject whenever it shares colors with the backdrop.
Two behaviors are worth knowing before you start. Removal applies to every matching pixel in the whole image, not only the area connected to your click, so clearing a white background will also remove white highlights or text inside the subject. And each click stacks on the previous one, so if you overshoot, use Change to reload the image and begin again.
